I am so, so proud and excited to unveil my new passion project, the Chant Choir.
This idea for a singing group has been quietly percolating in my head and my heart for quite a whiile now, and I’m finally gathering up the courage to share it with the world (or at least my fellow hills-folk)
This choir is part of a much bigger project – writing and recording an album.
I’ve been working on vocal arrangements of some really beautiful chants and mantras from around the world and I’m looking to record them later this year.
I’m in the composition stage at the moment: tinkering with melodies on my laptop and throwing hissy fits at my iPad.
My next step is to try it out with some voices. That’s where you come in.
It’s a bit of an experiment, but basically we’ll be using the voices in the group as an instrument to complete and arrange the final songs for the album.
We’ll be working with a mixture of short chants, rounds, longer songs and circle songs as well as using improvised singing to come up with different song elements (don’t worry, it’s super easy and I’ll be there to guide the whole process)
You don’t need to be an experienced singer or musician to take part in this process. Like I said, it’s a total experiment and everyone is welcome to join in. One thing I can guarantee is that it will be a fun and creative journey.
This will probably NOT be an ongoing project, I’m thinking maybe one or two terms. That said, if we’re really enjoying ourselves we can definitely keep going.
You do not need to have any singing or musical experience to join in.
I also hasten to add that this is not a religious group although there is definitely a spiritual component. We will be exploring different sacred music traditions from around the world throughout our time together, but you don’t need to subscribe to any particular belief system to sing.
If you have a favourite chant, quote, mantra or prayer that you would like to explore with the group you are welcome to bring it along.
No weekly commitment is required. There is a financial incentive for signing up for the full term, but I understand that not everyone can do this, so drop ins are totally fine.
If you have any questions feel free to get in touch. Otherwise we hope to see you on the 20th of April.
